Week In Review 2018: Week 21

Happy Fresh New Term!! At least it’s a fresh new term for us, & there’s something about a lovely fresh new term that is a little bit like a fresh new week or year. A chance to begin again & reach new goals, to enjoy the journey & discover new things.

Our year has been a bit shaky with making multiple {not normal for us} changes in our curriculum to suit our current life circumstances. While I know that there is much to be said for staying any given course, there is also much to be said to teaching our children to adapt to the changes around them without forfeiting your standards. If nothing else, hopefully this insanely rocky year will have taught our children that simple life lesson.

Week In Review 2018: Week 10

We wrapped up our final week of term last week, with an attitude of wrapping up a few loose ends before the week was out. I wasn't sure if we'd take a full week off before jumping into Term 2, but Mr S ended up with an extra day off over the Easter Holidays, & our car is booked into the shop 2 days after he returns so off we are then.

Someone in our home is not keen to let go of the Winter Olympics & is doing everything in his power to keep them alive. He's been working on this painted rock for a while. He'd actually sketched it out & painted it, but been unhappy with some shading he had around Soohorang's nose & ended up shelving it for a while before he decided how to fix it up. He's still not 100% happy, but we all know what it is & I think it's pretty cool that he found a rock that had the shape of one of the ears!

Core 300 Videos Weeks 1-3

As we wind our way through the modern world history of Core 300, I'm weaving in various documentaries & videos, mostly from YouTube for my boy. I tend to like to leave a trail of what we did so that when we circle through with the next child I can look through my notes, blog posts, & journals to see what we did. That's exactly what the Core 300 Video posts will be.

My word of warning is that what suits one family may not suit another, & thus if you choose to view the video links I'm using with your own children I'd urge you to read any notes or comments I make about the videos & to also preview it yourself first.  Also note these are not fictional videos/movies. I may, or may not, share what we watch in that regard in an entirely different post.

Week In Review 2018: Week 9

Despite our somewhat lopsided, dark, & slow mornings we're still reading our through our stack of books. We finished up Ember Falls last week & I opted not to start a new read aloud until after Easter holidays. I have a few up my sleeve I'd like to break into, but I might have a mutiny if we don't finish this series first.

2018 Curriculum Choices {Again}

Isn’t it funny how you think you know what you’re doing & something comes along to show you, that despite doing this gig for 12 years you have absolutely 0 clues as to what you’re really doing? That’s what happened this year. So despite having already written one of these posts & having settled on previously chosen curriculum I’m actually writing another because we’ve changed our plans so drastically.

Learning to adapt to the situations we are in is a life skill of great importance, & sometimes that also means knowing that we have to change our plans. I’m not one for throwing our plans askew because of a hiccup here or there, but when the boat is about to capsize it’s time to change our plans & head for safer waters.

By the way, how about our school planner? I totally love that photo I had printed on the cover. It makes me smile each & every time I see it! Also, the photo below is just a place holder until I have time to line up curriculum & actually snap a photo of what Jayde is doing, it's actually a previous photo from Morga's 8th grade year.. Morgan's photo is also his planner cover..

Feb & March Catch Up

What a school year it’s been! I had a friend once tell me she couldn’t fathom writing, publicly, about the curriculum choices of her family because what if God led you to circumstances that meant you ended up doing something entirely different. You know, I’ve thought about that statement a lot in the past because I think it’s fairy common for most of us to start our with fantastic {on paper} ideas & make changes through our year.

This year has been quite the year for my own little gang, & scarily enough we’re not quite done with our first term yet! We started in January as is our normal custom, took time off for the olympics & some deep reflections on our curriculum choices & then made some dramatic changes for our family in regards to curriculum, & are back at things again.

Planner Monday Wk 6

Last week was total insanity here in our home. I was feeling a bit off peak, & absolutely exhausted so wile my planner ended up filled in, I didn't refer to it much beyond Monday. Some weeks are like that though, & you just pick up where you left off. I was feeling better by the end of the week, which was nice as I had a fair amount of things to catch up on.

This week we have a birthday, thus the crazy sloth. I actually stamped & coloured him back at the end of last year or early this year & put him in there. He was a spare one that looks cute, but didn't turn out 100% as I was hoping for with some cards I was making. I took forever to make those cards too & oddly enough I never mailed them out because a certain child allowed a bird to soil on them. Alas, I think those cards were never meant to make it to their destinations...

2018 Week In Review: Week 2

I debated skipping a week in review for this week as it was an unusual week for us, especially being week two. But I’m also big on sharing that while we have a lot of great days, everyone has bad ones. It’s just a matter of one foot in front of the other when they occur. So, despite having a semi chaotic week, I figured I’d share about it anyway.

We started out with all new material, but I realised that we’d worked at half pace in some areas & full pace in other areas. So on day 2 we decided to play “catch-up” with the half-paced subjects as well as continue forward movement in math.

Planner Monday: Wk 4

No, I didn't miss the fact that I titled this Planner Monday when it's really a Tuesday, life was a bit chaotic & busy for us this past week which is the way of life when dealing with the care of an older relative at times. So here we are, on Tuesday, writing about Planner Mondays.

It's also not the best photo because I took after collapsing for the evening in the lounge room, which means there were no lights on, but hey it's been documented, right? And lest I should be asked, those temperatures in the top box are in Fahrenheit, otherwise we'd be puddles of humans. I accidentally  sent the weather to Mr S in Fahrenheit the other day instead of celsius & he was like, "What?!" Ahh, we had ourselves a great laugh about it in the end.

2018 Week In Review: Week 1

It was back to school around our house this past week, & boy was it nice to fall back into routines & structure. To have a semblance of normal in this crazy life we live right now. Life is anything but normal & calm for my family, so when we have that one reliable thing that is.. yeah, it’s good.
Ironically, two days before school was set to start we made some last minute curriculum changes. I was already under a lot of stress from the whole airport saga, & then as I sat down to finalise schedules for the week I felt led to take another route with our oldest. Crazy, I know. We sat him down & had a chat about it, & unrolled the new plans.
