Jigsaw Books

4

I have this local bookstore that use to be a really fantastic store with really fantastic staff. I was willing to spend a bit more money and let them hunt down my book then take the time and bring it in from America or England. When this bookstore was fantastic and wonderful we use to pop in when we were in town because they often had fantastic deals, sidewalk sales, or attic sales. On one such day we wandered upstairs tripping over piles of books and scanning the many piles on make shift tables on the second level for something we might enjoy. That's when we discovered the jigsaw books put out by Five Mile Press. These books are fantastic books! I grabbed up the Explorer book for $4.99 (AUD). Inside the book you'll find 5 different jigsaws based on a variety of different explorers. When you remove the puzzle you'll find more maps underneath as well with colorful lines and arrows showing the various routes said explorers took. You'll also find a lengthy piece written about each explorer on the page opposite the puzzle. The boys love doing the puzzles while I read about the explorers.

After a while our bookstore changed hands and they have been the least liked bookstore on my list for months. So much so that I've considered giving them a piece of my mind, or writing to their headquarters, or anything.. Instead I shop at the bookstore in the next town over, who has apparently heard MANY complaints about our local branch. The guy at the next store over will continue to call every number he can think of when you mistakenly give him the wrong phone number. He will be so persistent he will finally realize he owns a phonebook, he will locate you in the phone book and call to report that he has the book you want and he'll pop it in the mail tomorrow if I still want it. Now that, my friends, is my kinda book service! Anyway.. in May I braved the stinky book store in hopes of finding a classic (which they don't have, but I wasn't totally surprised..) While in there, I saw the Dolphin jigsaw book and I scooped it up for a meager $4.99 for Jayden's birthday. Jayden is obsessed with dolphins and puzzles, and he loves the book.

In July I decided to brave the book store again in hopes of finding Mr Popper's Penguins, after all why wouldn't they have that book, right? Yeah, they didn't even know what I was talking about. Not to be picky or anything, but what kind of freak runs a book store and doesn't know about Mr Popper's Penguins, The Jungle Book, or Little House On The Prairie. Not to get totally carried away, but come on you have to know at least ONE of those, right? Tell me I'm a book snob, but don't tell me I'm wrong! Despite my irritation and disappointment, I found the Bible jigsaw book, again for $4.99 and I scooped that one up too. I considered buying two, so I could give one away as a Christmas gift, but I didn't.

So today I went in again, you know I figured I was safe this time. I didn't want a classic (to most), I didn't want something for school (so time wasn't a huge factor), in fact all I wanted was a book by Mo Willems. A cute little Elephant & Piggie book to give away as (dare I admit this) an 18th birthday present (weird, but oh so true..) Could I find what I wanted? No, of course not! This is my local branch of Angust & Roberston. I'm destined to never EVER find what I want in that place. I'm destined to be sneezed on, growled at, and glared upon by the person who pretends to work behind the counter. Come on though, no Elephant & Piggie books? There must be a law against such cruelty!! How can anyone not have ever read about all the funny antics of Elephant & Piggie! Okay, so we may be a little addicted to these two loveable creatures, but...

While wandering the store in an attempt to stay out of the way of employees (I'm pretty sure they are out to make my life miserable) I noticed a jigsaw book about Ancient Rome. I was delighted because we'll be studying Rome in the not too distant future so I scooped up the book and was mortified to see a sticker on it for $21.99. In fact I'm pretty sure I had one of those, "Is this a joke.." kinda looks upon my face. So I handed it to my husband, because I refuse to speak to the employees in that store anymore, and I asked him to see if they'd discount the book because three corners were bent up and one was damaged (broken). Just to make me happy he walked up and asked, they offered him a meager 10% discount, and while I thought they truly could have done better they might have just won back a very tiny fraction of the respect I've lost for them. So, if you have a good bookstore, you know the kind where people don't sneeze on you or complain because you ask them for books they've never heard of (but should have) and where they don't try to send you to the library because doing their job is just too much trouble... While you're rushing out to get the latest Piggie & Elephant Book (cause I know you will!) then check out these very cool jigsaw books too.

Michele, Barns & Noble as well as Amazon carry SOME of them. You'd have to get them while you can from B & N though because they seem to be clearance!

Yup, Kylie, we love the books, hate the service. lol

Love, LOVE, LOVE!!! Elephant and Piggie books around here. Really no fun to have bad book stores, though, especially ones that used to be good. Off to see if I can locate any of those puzzle books....
